The Love That Drives Out Fear

1 John 4:4–6

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognise the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

Fear is one of the most destructive enemies of love. It forces you into self-protection, defensiveness, suspicion, and control. Fear makes you stingy with compassion, hesitant to forgive, and cautious in your relationships. You cannot love deeply while living fearfully.

Overcoming fear is not a matter of commanding yourself to “be brave”. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the conscious presence of Someone greater: the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Jesus loved without self-protection because He was unshakeably anchored in the Father’s love. His love was bold, generous, and completely free from the need to manage outcomes.

Allow the Holy Spirit to dismantle the fears that restrict your relationships. Fear shrinks love, but the Spirit expands it.

What fear is currently limiting your capacity to love others—and how does trusting the Spirit within you change your posture?
