Testing the Spirits: Learning to Discern What Shapes You

1 John 4:1–3

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognise the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

Discernment is not cynicism or suspicion; it is spiritual clarity. It is the developed capacity to recognize what is actively shaping your inner world, and evaluating whether it leads you toward Christ or pulls you away from Him.

You are constantly surrounded by narratives, cultural pressures, and internal impulses. Not everything that sounds profound is true, not everything that feels empowering is holy, and not everything that offers comfort is aligned with God.

Apply the test: Does this influence confess the reality of Jesus? Does it align with His character, mirror His humility, reflect His cross, and produce His fruit in your life? If it appeals to your pride, justifies your bitterness, or feeds your self-centeredness, reject it outright.

Become ruthlessly intentional about what you allow to form your soul.

What media, relationship, or internal narrative do you need to test today—and does it truly draw you closer to Christ?
