There’s something beautiful about the way Samuel responds to God — not with certainty or bravado, but with a simple openness: Speak, I’m listening. It’s the posture of someone whose heart is turned toward God, ready to notice, ready to respond, even if he doesn’t yet know what will be asked of him.

Availability, in the life of faith, isn’t about being endlessly busy or constantly “on duty.” It’s about cultivating a heart that’s attentive — a heart that leaves space for God to nudge, whisper, guide, or surprise. It’s the quiet willingness to be interrupted, to be redirected, to be used in ways we might not have planned.
Samuel didn’t make himself important. He simply made himself present. And that presence — that openness — became the soil where God’s voice could take root. Over time, that listening heart shaped his whole life. He became someone others trusted, not because he was impressive, but because he was faithful.
We sometimes imagine that God only calls the bold or the gifted, the confident or the extraordinary. But Scripture tells a different story. God often chooses the overlooked, the uncertain, the ones who feel too young or too ordinary. What matters isn’t our strength but our willingness. A listening heart can carry more grace than a loud one.
And availability doesn’t mean saying yes to everything. It means saying yes to God. It means paying attention to the quiet stirrings within us — the compassion that rises unexpectedly, the thought that won’t leave us alone, the person who comes to mind out of nowhere. These small moments are often where calling begins.
To be available is to say, in the ordinary rhythm of the day, “Here I am, Lord. If there’s something you want to do through me, I’m listening.” It’s a gentle posture, not a pressured one. And God, who knows us better than we know ourselves, works beautifully with even the smallest willingness.
