Wearing Christ Close to the Heart

There’s a lovely simplicity in Paul’s words to the Romans — an invitation to wrap ourselves in the presence of Christ as naturally as we put on our clothes each morning. It’s not about pretending to be someone we’re not, or forcing ourselves into a shape that doesn’t fit. It’s about letting His way of being settle around us, shaping how we move through the day.

Romans 13:14 (NLT): “Clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.”

When Paul speaks of clothing ourselves with Christ, he’s talking about something close and familiar — something that goes with us wherever we go. It’s the quiet decision, made again and again, to let His compassion guide our words, His patience steady our reactions, His gentleness soften our edges. It’s not dramatic. It’s not showy. It’s simply choosing, in the ordinary moments of the day, to let His presence shape ours.

Over time, people may notice. Not because we’re trying to impress anyone, but because a life shaped by Christ has a certain warmth to it — a steadiness, a kindness, a way of seeing others that feels different. And often, that quiet witness speaks more loudly than anything we could say.

Of course, it isn’t always easy. There are days when our own worries, frustrations, or impulses feel far more natural to “put on” than anything Christlike. There are moments when we’d rather protect ourselves, or push ahead, or cling to our own preferences. But even then, God doesn’t meet us with scolding. He meets us with understanding. He knows how we’re made. He knows what stretches us, what strengthens us, what brings us joy. He knows the shape of our hearts better than we do.

To clothe ourselves in Christ is to trust that His way leads us toward the life we were created for — a life marked by grace, courage, tenderness, and truth. It’s a daily choice, sometimes a quiet struggle, but always an invitation into something deeper and freer.

And the beautiful thing is that we don’t do it alone. The Spirit nudges, strengthens, and steadies us. Christ walks with us. God surrounds us with love. All we’re asked to do is take the next small step.

Challenge for today: What is one simple way you can “put on” the presence of Christ in an ordinary moment of your day?
