Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
The beginning of this year has limped in, there has been no huge party, I did not meet up with family. The advice on the news was to assume we are infected and to try and keep every one safe.
The psalmist suggests that we keep an account of our days – live each one well. Some may consider this to be a mere countdown but it can be a life giving resource. What must I achieve today? What can I let go of? What would I like to do? And how can I align all these things?
For me, it begins with a pause. Each day begins with time to just breathe as I read scripture, and pray. What does God require of me today?

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire— but my ears you have opened— burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
Psalm 40:6
I do not pause out of ritual but out of need. A need to spend time with my Father.
I am no longer my own but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will; put me to doing, put me to suffering; let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you, exalted for you, or brought low for you; let me be full, let me be empty, let me have all things, let me have nothing: I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.'
