“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” —Ephesians 6:17 NLT
There are seasons in life when it feels as though pressure is coming from every side—when challenges seem to close in, when discouragement whispers from one direction and temptation from another, when the weight of the world presses in so tightly that you can hardly catch your breath. Most of us know that feeling. It’s the sense of being surrounded, hemmed in, pushed to the edges of our strength.
Spiritually, it can feel the same. There are days when the enemy seems to be everywhere—subtle lies, old wounds, familiar temptations, unexpected discouragements. And yet many believers still imagine the Christian life as something gentle and untroubled, forgetting that Scripture describes it as a battleground. Not a place of fear, but a place of awareness. Not a place of panic, but a place of preparation.
As women, we know what it is to fight quietly—to protect our families, guard our hearts, and stand firm in seasons that stretch us. We know what it is to feel the weight of responsibility and the ache of vulnerability. And spiritually, we are called to the same kind of strength: not frantic striving, but steady readiness.
Paul reminds us that God has given us armour—real, spiritual protection—and among those pieces is one offensive weapon: the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. It’s not a weapon of aggression or harm; it’s a weapon of truth. A weapon that cuts through lies, confusion, and fear. A weapon that steadies us when the enemy presses in.
Jesus Himself used Scripture this way. When He was tempted in the wilderness, He didn’t argue, negotiate, or panic. He simply spoke truth. Three times the enemy tried to twist His thinking, and three times Jesus answered with the Word. And the enemy fled. That’s the power of Scripture—not loud, not dramatic, but decisive.
When we’re tempted, weary, or overwhelmed, the Word of God becomes our strength. It reminds us who we are. It reminds us who God is. It reminds us that we are not powerless, not abandoned, not left to fend for ourselves. When we reach for Scripture in moments of weakness, we take the high ground. We steady our footing. We push back against the enemy’s advance.
And the more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the sharper our sword becomes. The enemy has no counter for truth. No strategy that can overpower God’s Word. No darkness that can extinguish its light.
So when you feel surrounded, don’t shrink back. Don’t wait for the next attack. Take the battle to the enemy by filling your heart, your mind, and your mouth with the Word of God. Let truth be the ground you stand on and the strength you carry.
You are not fighting alone. And you are not fighting unarmed.
What about you? How might you weave Scripture more intentionally into your daily rhythms so you’re spiritually equipped before the battle even begins?
