Jesus himself came up and walked along with them. Luke 24:15
Selah
Be still and know…
Picture a place filled with memories.
A chair. A kitchen table. A favourite corner.
Sit there in your imagination for a moment.
Notice what rises within you.
Be still and know that I am God.
Reflection
There are chairs that become sacred.
Not because they are special chairs, but because special people sat in them.
A grandfather’s armchair.
A place at the dinner table.
A favourite pew in church.
Sometimes an empty chair speaks loudly.
It reminds us of those who are no longer with us. It reminds us of conversations shared and laughter enjoyed. It reminds us how deeply our lives are bound together.
Yet empty chairs tell only part of the story.
When the disciples walked to Emmaus, they thought they had lost Jesus completely. They assumed absence.
In reality, Christ was closer than ever.
Perhaps there are moments when we need to look beyond what is missing and pay attention to what remains.
Love remains.
Memory remains.
Faith remains.
And Christ remains.
God often meets us in familiar places. Not because he lives in furniture or buildings but because our hearts become attentive there.
The empty chair may remind us of absence.
It may also remind us of gratitude.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, meet me in places rich with memory. Turn my sorrow into thanksgiving and my loneliness into awareness of your presence. Amen.
Road Question
What place helps me remember God’s faithfulness?
Emmaus Refrain
Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road?
