“His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.”
Lamentations 3:22–23
There is something hopeful about morning.
Whatever happened yesterday, morning comes.
The conversation we wish had gone differently.
The thing we didn’t manage to finish.
The moment when we weren’t quite the person we wanted to be.
Yesterday may have been wonderful.
Or difficult.
Or simply exhausting.
And then morning comes.
The writer of Lamentations knew something about difficult days. Yet right in the middle of everything that was wrong, he remembered something that was still true:
God’s mercy had not run out.
Not yesterday.
Not today.
Not tomorrow.
Sometimes we carry yesterday into today as though we need to keep punishing ourselves for it.
God doesn’t ask us to do that.
There may be things to put right.
There may be apologies to make.
There may be lessons to learn.
But there is also mercy.
Fresh mercy.
Perhaps that is what you need this morning.
Don’t begin today dragging yesterday behind you.
Receive what God is giving you now.
A new morning.
A fresh beginning.
Mercy again.
Carry this today
Today begins with mercy I haven’t used up.
Prayer
Merciful God,
thank you for the gift of another morning.
Help me to learn from yesterday
without being trapped by it.
Thank you that your compassion does not fail
and your mercy meets me again today.
Amen.
