Mercy in Our Mess

Stacks of newspapers and records crowd a cluttered room beside a dirty mirror marked mercy

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.”
Lamentations 3:22

Some days are messy.

Not dramatic.

Just messy.

Plans go wrong.
We lose patience.
We say the wrong thing.
We worry about things we cannot change.
We start the day determined to do better and somehow, by lunchtime, it has all unravelled.

And sometimes we think we need to tidy ourselves up before coming to God.

Let me sort this out first.

Let me get myself together.

Then I’ll pray.

But mercy doesn’t wait at the end of the mess.

God meets us in it.

Right there in the kitchen when everything has gone wrong.

In the car when the tears come.

In the middle of the conversation we wish had gone differently.

In the quiet moment when we finally admit, I’m struggling.

God is there.

Mercy doesn’t require us to have a polished life.

It simply asks us to turn towards the One whose compassion does not fail.

So if today feels a little messy, don’t wait until you have sorted it all out.

God is already there.

Carry this today

I don’t have to get out of the mess before God meets me.

Prayer

Merciful God,
meet me in the untidy places of my life today.
When things don’t go to plan,
when I struggle,
when I don’t have the answers,
remind me that your compassion does not fail.
Amen.

Yesterday at the foodbank I got a call that meant I had to leave but I was on cafe duty. I wondered how to proceed. My options were bring someone in, leave the mess and come back later, stay and be late. Just as I was praying through these things – one of the foodbank clients quietly came into the kitchen and began drying up the pots. So grateful.
