Loss arrives in Ruth’s story in layers. First Elimelech dies, then Mahlon and Kilion. Naomi’s world contracts until she is left with grief, two daughters-in-law, and no clear future. The text does not rush past her pain; it lets us feel the weight of it.
Loss often comes in layers for us too a disappointment here, a change we did not choose, a relationship that shifts, a hope that fades. This season can bring its own losses as summer ends and life tightens up again. Naomi’s story reminds us that God does not ask us to pretend. He meets us in the honest weight of what we carry, even while a path home is already forming that she cannot yet see.
A gentle practice for today: Name one loss you are carrying, and let it be spoken before God. Lord, hold me in the places where my heart feels heavy.
