Hebrews 13:21 (NLT) “May he equip you with all you need for doing his will.”
Fear wears many disguises. Some are humorous, like the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. Others are strange, like the fear of ventriloquist dummies. But the fear that gripped Jesus’ disciples after Good Friday was neither humorous nor strange. It was raw, suffocating, and paralysing.
These were the men and women who had walked with Jesus, listened to Him teach, watched Him heal, and believed He was the Messiah. Yet after the cross, they hid behind locked doors, unsure of what to do next. Their courage had evaporated. Their confidence had collapsed. Their future felt impossible.
And into that fear, the risen Jesus came.
Before He ascended, Jesus didn’t simply give His disciples a mission — He equipped them for it. He met them in their confusion. He spoke peace into their panic. He restored what shame had broken. He gave them what they lacked: courage, clarity, forgiveness, purpose, and the assurance of His presence.
Thomas needed evidence. Jesus gave it. Peter needed restoration. Jesus offered it. The disciples needed direction. Jesus provided it. They needed hope. Jesus breathed it into them.
When Thomas declared he would not believe unless he touched the wounds, Jesus didn’t scold him. He invited him closer. He met Thomas at the exact point of his doubt and turned it into faith. That moment wasn’t about proof — it was about preparation. Thomas would one day carry the gospel far beyond Jerusalem. Jesus was equipping him for that journey.
Peter’s story is just as tender. His failure was spectacular, and the weight of it nearly crushed him. But on the shore of Galilee, Jesus didn’t lecture him. He asked him a question: “Do you love me?” Three times. Not to shame him, but to heal him. With each answer, Jesus rewrote Peter’s story — from denial to devotion, from collapse to calling.
This is what the risen Christ does. He equips His people. He gives what we lack. He restores what we break. He strengthens what is weak. He prepares us for what He asks of us.
And He still does it today.
Whatever God calls you to do, He supplies what you need to do it. Not in advance, like a stockpile, but in the moment — grace for today, strength for the task, courage for the step in front of you. The God who equipped fearful disciples behind locked doors equips you as well.
“May he equip you with all you need for doing his will.” That is not a wish. It is a promise.
